Offer prepaid product subscriptions on your Shopify store

Released: July 15, 2021

Prepaid subscription orders are paid in advance and create scheduled fulfillments over the prepaid period that are created at the time of order. These orders will have a Scheduled status until the fulfillment date is reached. When the fulfillment date is reached, the order status updates to Unfulfilled and you can then fulfill the order. The order's status then changes back to Scheduled until the next fulfillment date is reached and the cycle begins again.

To set up prepaid subscriptions using Simple Subscriptions do the following:

Using the editor from the "Subscription Plans" tab in the Simple Subscriptions app (recommended)

  1. Create or edit a subscription plan from the "Subscription Plans" tab in the Simple Subscriptions app. Changes associated with this plan will apply going forward only. Existing customer subscriptions will not be affected.

  2. Select plan type "Prepaid" to enable the "Bill every" field. Billing recurrence must be a multiple of delivery recurrence. e.g. Bill every 4 months, deliver every 1 month would have customers prepay for 4 months of monthly deliveries.

  3. Save your changes.

From the product page

  1. Create or edit a subscription plan group from a product page. Changes associated with this plan will apply going forward only. Existing customer subscriptions will not be affected.

  2. Use the billing and delivery recurrence interval fields under the "Subscription Plans" section to configure your prepaid plan. The same requirements for billing in multiples of deliveries applies.

  3. Save your changes
